# Create an account

> Create your guito account with an email code, answer a few quick questions, and add your first account.

This is your first task in guito: create your account, tell us what to call you and what you want to track, and add your first account. It takes a few minutes, and you can get started without paying anything.

You can use guito on the [website](https://guito.app), on iPhone through the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6792839142?pt=128781574\&ct=docs-create-account\&mt=8), or on Android through [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pt.guito.app\&referrer=utm_source%3Ddocs%26utm_medium%3Ddocs%26utm_campaign%3Ddocs-create-account). Use the same account on every device.

The first time you visit guito.app, it opens in your browser's language (Spanish, French or Italian; otherwise English). You can switch language with the page's language selector, and your choice is remembered.

## Create your account

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open guito">
    In the mobile app, choose **Log in or sign up**. On the website, open the sign-in page. You can also continue with Apple or Google, without the next steps.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your email">
    Type your email and choose **Continue**. You don't need a password: the same step works for a new account and for one that already exists. You can manage [email notifications](/en/account/email-notifications) in Settings after signing in.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the code">
    We send a 6-digit code to that email. Enter it to sign in. If Gmail or another email client offers a copy-code shortcut, you can use it; in the app, you can also press and hold the code field and choose **Paste**. If you've already set a password, you can choose **Use a password** instead of the code. Never share this code with anyone.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Your first steps in the app

The first time you sign in to the iPhone or Android app, guito asks you a few quick questions, one at a time, and helps you add your first account. Your name and country are required; the other steps have **Later**, to move on without answering: anything left undone can be done afterwards from the **Summary**.

### Name

Enter **what you would like us to call you**. If you signed in with Apple or Google, your first name is already filled in and you can change it. It's the name guito greets you by in the app, the assistant and emails; it doesn't change the name on your invoices.

### Goals

Pick what you'd like help with: knowing where the money goes, saving for a goal, spending less each month, seeing every account in one place, or tracking investments. You can pick several or none. With **Track investments**, the investments step comes before the bank step.

### Country you live in

On **Which country do you live in?**, the list of countries is right on the screen, with one already ticked from your phone's region setting or your location; tap another to pick it, or search for it by name. **Continue** becomes available once a country is chosen.

### A budget to start with

For some new accounts, guito also suggests a monthly budget, when you pick knowing where the money goes, saving or spending less, or when you pick no goal. Enter how much you earn a month, take-home, or choose **I'd rather not say**: the suggestion then starts from a reference income of €1,200.

The suggestion splits that amount into lines such as Home, Day to day, Transportation and Leisure, plus a **Savings** line, set apart under **Goal**: that one is saved as a goal, not as a budget. If you chose to save for a goal, that line doesn't appear: the emergency fund gets its own step next. Tap an amount to change it, a line's name or icon to edit them, or the ✕ to remove it; **Add a line** adds others. Choose **Save budget** to create the budgets, or **Later** to move on without them. guito doesn't change the saved budget automatically: adjust it whenever you like in [Budgets](/en/features/budgets).

### Emergency fund

If you chose to save for a goal, the step after the budget is **Your emergency fund**. **Average monthly expenses** is filled in with your budget's total, and **Months of coverage** starts at 6. Tap the expenses to change them, and pick 3, 6, 9 or 12 months in a single row. The **Target** is the two multiplied, and the fund counts the money in all your accounts. Choose **Create emergency fund**, or **Later** to move on without it. You can change these anytime on the **Summary**, including a different number of months.

### Investments

Connect [Trading 212](/en/features/trading-212) or [Interactive Brokers](/en/features/interactive-brokers) to keep your positions up to date, or choose **Add an investment** to record one manually: stocks, ETFs, crypto and more, plus retirement plans (PPR) and Certificados de Aforro if you live in Portugal. If the broker needs the Plus plan, **Later** (or the back arrow) brings you back to this step, so you can pick another option.

### Your bank

Search for your bank or pick it from the list and authorise access on the bank's portal, as described in [Connect your bank](/en/getting-started/connect-your-bank). If you have never tried Plus, the **Authorise with 14 days free** button starts the trial and the authorisation in one go, no card required.

If you'd rather not connect your bank, choose **Add an account manually**, at the end of the list, to track the balance and transactions manually. After a manual account, or if you leave the bank for later, guito offers the investments step if it hasn't shown it yet. Setup ends on **You're all set**: choose **Go to guito** to open your **Summary**. After connecting a bank, the investments step is skipped: add them whenever you like, from the **Summary**.

### Help improve guito

Once the **Summary** has an account, the app asks once whether you allow it to record how you use the app, to improve guito. **Accept** and **Decline** carry the same weight, and you can change your answer in **Profile -> Settings -> Privacy**, under **Usage analytics**.

## Your first steps on the website

The first time you sign in on the website, guito asks what you want to track: accounts and spending, budgets, goals, investments, property and assets. Pick everything that applies. Next, on **Which country do you live in?**, check **Country you live in**, filled in from your location when it's one of the countries in the list. The line below the field says what that country changes, such as which banks come first, and **Continue** needs a country. Then guito offers to connect your bank with automatic sync or, instead, to **Import a statement** or **Add manually**. You can skip the other steps and do them later.

The **Start here** card then shows the steps suggested for your choices, such as connecting an account, creating a budget, or setting a goal. If you close it, it stays available under **Start here** in the sidebar until you finish the steps or choose **Don't show again**.

To change the name guito greets you by, click your avatar in the sidebar, open **Settings** and, on the **General** tab, change **What we call you**. The name on your invoices is the one you enter in **Name on invoice** when you subscribe to Plus.

<Tip>
  The **Overview** starts empty. As you add accounts, investments, and other assets, your total net worth and history are built automatically.
</Tip>

## Get started for free

Your account starts on the Free plan, which you can use for as long as you like. When you want to use a Plus feature — connecting a bank with automatic sync, for example — you can choose **Try 14 days free** and get access to every feature for 14 days, no card required. See how it works in [Free trial](/en/account/free-trial).

<Note>
  You can compare what each plan includes, see prices, and subscribe later in [Plans and pricing](/en/account/plans-and-pricing).

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can I turn off vibration in the app?">
    Yes. In **Profile -> Settings**, turn off **Haptics**. The sign-in screen uses a gentle vibration when text appears and disappears. This preference also disables that vibration and feedback from sign-in controls and results.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why does guito ask which country I live in?">
    The country you live in, not your language, decides which banks are offered first and which country-specific products and tools appear: Portuguese savings products such as PPR and savings certificates (Certificados de Aforro), and the **Calculators** menu, only appear for Portugal. Language and country are separate: you can live in Portugal and use guito in English, for example.

    You can choose any of the eurozone countries where guito syncs banks: Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Luxembourg and Croatia. If you live somewhere else, choose **Another country**, the last option in the list: the Portugal-only products and the **Calculators** menu are hidden and, when you add a bank, you pick the bank's country from the list.

    If your account predates this question, or you never answered it, the website and the app ask once, **Which country do you live in?**, with a country already suggested; choose **Confirm**. If you close it without answering, it comes back on your next visit, and until you answer, guito assumes Portugal.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I change the country I live in?">
    On the website, click your avatar in the sidebar, open **Settings** and, on the **Localisation** tab, change **Country you live in**. In the app, open **Profile -> Settings -> Language and region** and change **Country you live in**. The language is changed in the same place, without changing your country.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I didn't get the code. What do I do?">
    The email can take a minute. Check your spam or promotions folder, or choose **Resend code** on the same step. Also check that the email is spelled correctly: if it isn't, go back and fix it.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need a password?">
    No. You always sign in with the code we email you, or with Apple or Google. If you like, you can set a password in [Account security](/en/account/account-security) and choose **Use a password** when signing in.
  </Accordion>
